Magpie

8x8" oil on panel

I've always thought that Magpies were one of the most beautiful birds. The bold black and white just doesn't need any colorful embellishment, its just purely elegant.

Paz, you made me curious, so I did some research. Sorry, I don't think you will ever see a Magpie in NY. They are common throughout the west (and the west coast has a yellow-billed variety) and I've seen them in Europe, most recently in Denmark. Don't know why they don't live on the east coast. However, when I googled "magpies new york" I did discover that you have a soccer team by that name.... :-)

Oh, wow! Thanks for looking this up. That's too bad I won't get to see them in the city. Maybe I'll go check out that NY soccer team. And I'll continue to enjoy your magpie painting. ;-)

Hi Terry, great picture, although Magpies dont have such a great rep here in the UK. They such big birds that they compete with the smaller song birds, until all you can hear is that harsh metalic caw.

However, they are inpressive and you have really caught that here!

Hi Ed - I do enjoy their brassiness, including their caw, BUT, we don't have very many. I can see where they could be a problem.... but still a very pretty one :-) Thanks for stopping by!
